Grade Pre K-2
Subject- Literacy
In this activity my 3 and 6 year olds retold a story using clay and Makey Makeys. It is a great activity for teaching parts of a story.
Lesson Outline:
- Read a story with repetition to students.
- Students identify the main characters then make the characters out of clay.
- Choose or draw the characters in Scratch.
- Identify the setting and then make models of the setting (optional)
- Choose or draw backgrounds that match the setting into Scratch.
- Students recall what the characters say then record it into scratch.
- Attach the clay characters to the Makey Makey and set up the code so that when (chosen key) is pressed it plays the recorded sound.
- With younger kids you will need to set up the coding yourself. With older kids they can set it up. See this example project to copy the code.
- Kids retell the story using their clay characters.
- Extension: Rewrite the story using the same pattern but make it their own by adjusting one element of the story such as choosing new characters.
